Modern Art

20 SEC ESSAY: Every now and then the debate rages – is modern art really art? Usually conceptual and temporary, pandering to the darker or bizarre side of life, many believe it is not art. Sadly, though, they are incorrect. Whilst it often lacks permanence – even, it could be argued, skill – an art form is a reflection of society; which is increasingly becoming conceptual and temporary in its fads.

Dealing with Hypocrisy

40 SEC ESSAY: I used to think that one of the greatest wrongs was to be a hypocrite. In most cases I still think this is true, but experience has taught me that life is so varied that sometimes hypocrisy is inevitable. For instance, I believe it is wrong to kill, but I would hope that if no alternative existed, I would do so to protect a loved one.
As a teenager I rebelled quite a lot. I now realize this is essential – it is part of growing your own character for adulthood. But as a parent I do all in my power to stop rebellion. Parents do. Yet on one level this is hypocrisy, but it is the way it should be. Hence, it is impossible to not be a hypocrite at times. So how do we deal with it being wrong, but also, at times, right? I suppose we should realize that life must always be a balance, and balance is best achieved through moderation in all things. In this way, the hypocrite in us all is reduced.

Proletariat

20 SEC ESSAY: The Proletariat is a lower social class. Marx saw them as being at the bottom – those who owned nothing. His philosophy was based on raising them into a classless society that owned everything. Of course, Marx was naïve. He forgot that some will always gain, and cling to, power. That’s why Capitalism beat Communism. But where’s the Proletariat today? Modern capitalism wants everyone to own something. But we forget some will always gain, and cling to, power. That’s why Communism is now masquerading as Capitalism. We all own everything as Marx wanted, but the power is still in the hands of the few. And the mass who own a little are still, nonetheless, at the bottom.

Zombies

20 SEC ESSAY: We now know that the Zombie was most likely a business venture. As slavery ended it seems that some plantation foremen in Haiti used a poison that aped death. Once buried, they’d dig up the victims and give an antidote, which revived them but left them without a mind. In this way, they could work them as they wished. As I look at much of corporate life today, I get the feeling that the idea has been perfected.

Totalitarianism

20 SEC ESSAY: We like to think we live in a free world, but the dangers are more than the jackboot. Sometimes lack of freedom can be subtle. Society, you see, has two elements – the people and the system. The system should be there to help the people, but all too often it can grow too powerful and end up controlling the people, whether they realize it or not. I guess it’s the natural course power will take in society. Society seems to be hardwired towards totalitarianism.

Politicians

20 SEC ESSAY: I criticise politicians a lot, and I make no apologies for this. The party system is such that they attract a particular kind of individual – usually a career person rather than one who is there to serve. But for once I’d like to say that not all politicians are like this. Some ARE there to serve, and they should be remembered – and remembered because no one does. Service rarely provides promotion or exposure.

Saving Freedom

20 SEC ESSAY: I want to tell you straight. Your freedoms are going. Government is getting dictatorial. Big Biz is becoming all encompassing. Technology is creeping into, and watching, every area of our life. But most of all, you are to blame. You are to blame because of your naivety, ‘cos nothing destroys freedom more than the idea you’ve got it.

Modern Comedy

20 SEC ESSAY: I find a problem with much modern comedy – it isn’t funny. It seems to be based on insult or inane behaviour. Comedy proper is a process of illogic, where a statement or action confronts the rationality of the experiencer, causing a self-defence mechanism called laughter. True comedy is so subtle that its practice is no laughing matter.

Who Are You?

20 SEC ESSAY: Who are you? I may seem to know you, but do I really? Does anyone really know anyone? We live in an image conscious world, and this is born in the conflict of your mind. The true you is the one inside, and the person people interact with is more a façade – a mask – crafted for social interaction. Maybe we don’t know anyone at all.

On Life

20 SEC ESSAY: Life’s a bitch – and I really mean that. Problems mount constantly. That’s why I’ve learnt to be optimistic. You see, problems can be obstacles or opportunities. The latter is best, leading me to plan for the worse and hope for the best. That way, most surprises are good ones. Life IS a bitch. As soon as you realise that, you can enjoy it.
