On Boxing Day 2004 the Indian Tectonic Plate was pushed under the Burma Plate. The subsequent earthquake went on for nearly ten minutes and was one of the highest-order of magnitude ever recorded by seismographs.
The initial result was to vibrate the entire planet by nearly half an inch, causing other earthquakes around the world. But being under the Indian Ocean, the main result was the triggering of a series of tsunamis which hit most coastal areas around the Indian Ocean, some rising to nearly one hundred feet. It is not known exactly how many people died, but it was in the order of a quarter of a million, with Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand being the hardest hit.
